  • America has led the world in refugee resettlement for 15 years, but asylum cases have pushed political tempers to a tipping point.

Asylum is one way that refugees come to America. If you’ve already fled your home country for fear of persecution, and come to the United States, but don’t have refugee status, applying for asylum is the next step you take. It’s a small subset of the American immigration system, but it’s the mechanism behind so much of the news about border.

Families recently separated from their children at the border came seeking asylum. People fleeing from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador — an area known as the Northern Triangle — come to the United States seeking asylum. To even get a hearing before an immigration judge, potential asylum-seekers have to prove that they have what’s called “credible fear” of returning home. And this is where that backlog really begins.

It’s worth noting that the U.S. is *directly* responsible for instituting some of these dictatorships that destabilized the region, back in the 70s/80s. This, to protect the interests of multinational fruit companies from “radical leftist governments” seeking to bring their citizens out of abject poverty and slave labor.

It's worth nothing that the US has let in more Migrants including Refugees and Asylum Seekers than any country ever, about a million each year.

Over 80% of asylum claims are false or fail to meet the basic requirements. if people paid a penalty for filing false claims we would have far fewer asylum seekers and not put a strain on our resources. Also, it is tiresome to hear how Americans are heartless and cruel not to let in everyone that wants to come. The USA has brought in over 60 million legal immigrants since we changed immigration policy with the 1965 Immigration Act and over 90% of those legal immigrants have been nonwhite. We also have...

im a hispanic and I know so many people filing these claims of asylum. All are bs just a way of gaming the system and circumventing inmigration law. I feel like a fool having gone through the legal process when all i had to do was lie about being "persecuted" and get rewarded with welfare for doing it. No other country is so stupid.

+Nate Dawg I would like to add that the real traitors to this country are people like you who make false claims and spread division and hate like fox propaganda and most right wing media does.

+Nate Dawg Please provide verifiable evidence from credible sources to back you claim. Why didn't you include Fox when they have been proven to the the most dishonest of all the news? I already proved Fox lies as policy, they routinely lie to its views while you just bullshit and pretend CNN or MSNBC have a policy of lying. Prove it you lying troll.

Love how no one mentions (including vox) how most of the countries these people are fleeing from are in the state they are today because of US intervention and imperialism in the region

It’s crazy how fast people can dehumanize other living, feeling people simply because they weren’t born from the same country. Guess not having a heart does that to ya.

yeah like the mexicans genocided 70,000 central americans in the last 10 years. Mexico naturalizes so few people the president is the one that actually does it. Yeah but lets not talk about that

It has nothing to do with feelings. It has to do with national sovereignty and laws. People should grow where they are planted and make a life for themselves there.

Seems like seeking asylum in the US is a waste of time. Takes years to get approved or even have a decision made, and even if you did get in you've made it into one of the most unequal societies on the planet, a third world country pretending it's still a first world one.

I agree with you. I as an EU citizen see no reason why I should move to the USA. The quality of life there is the equivalent of a second world country comparing to the EU.
