The buzz around the Black Panther movie release should come as no surprise to anyone keeping tabs on representation in media these days. People want movies that feature people of color and their stories. But there is a dearth in the supply of films produced that do that. Vox spoke with the UCLA sociology professor Darnell Hunt about how Hollywood has progressed to diversify its characters and stories to reflect the demographics of the US. Watch this video to understand how America’s changing makeup is key to Black Panther’s early dominance at the box office.

Got to love the 'I am a person of colour' comments who try to argue against more representation of ethnic minorities in pop culture. You are the Ben Carson's of entertainment. You don't speak for the billions of Humans with brown skin, light and dark.

The clips of the kids unbridled JOY about going to see “Black Panther” was awesome. Representation matters. The coolest thing about the Black Panther is the message it might sends these kids...because when you see a hero that LOOKS LIKE YOU, it helps you find the hero inside of you. Let them have their moment, there won’t be another one for another 20 years if history is any indication. The man who made “Black Panther” cool - Christopher Priest

Yh because you share such an arbitrary charetaristics with a person you see on TV such as the melanin levels you have in common with them tells people they can become like them even though statistically speaking you have a very low chance of even receiving there income bracket or becoming as famous as them and staring in movies which box office billions wouldn't it be better to teach children they can become high achievers in a meritocratic system rather than say that by virtue of you sharing the same ...

BLACK PANTHER IS NOT "ALL ABOUT REPRESENTATION" It's just a fun superhero adaptation. Jeez, stop ruining everything.

Claire Knight I agree but it's not at all that big of a deal. You don't see angry people ranting on twitter how there are only a handful of famous white rappers.

We need more Asian representation in Hollywood too, and none of those racist stereotypical roles. Time for Asians to be properly represented in the media too. #AsianRepresentInHollywood

Moss Linden i have no idea when u mean by major. I’m assuming you mean hyped up movies so there’s something like Get Out, but then old classics like blade. Even remake of movies such as the Wiz. There seems to be more back in the day such as Friday and house party. All films I loved(except the wiz I don’t like WoO either) but there’s also documentary type movies like Selma, Malcolm X, and straight outta Compton. I disliked everyone as they were boring to me as I like action packed movies like black pan...
