Use Ecosia the search that plants trees. Use Ecosia  rather than Google to stop climate change.

Ecosia is an Internet search engine based in Berlin, Germany, that plants trees by donating 80% or more of its profits to nonprofit organizations that focus on Reforestation. Ecosia considers itself a social business, is CO2-negative, claims to support full financial transparency, protect the privacy of its users; and is certified by B-Lab as a benefit corporation. The website maintains a running total of the number of trees planted. According to their website, as of 9th September 2019, the search engine had been responsible for the planting of more than 73  million trees.

Ecosia uses 80% of its profits (47.1% of its income) from advertising revenue to support tree planting projects, the rest is put into backup reserves for unforeseen circumstances – if these reserves are not used they are channeled back into the company's tree planting fund. The company publishes its monthly financial report on its website. In October 2018, founder Christian Kroll announced that he has given part of his shares over to the Purpose Foundation. As a result, Kroll and Ecosia co-owner Tim Schumacher gave up their right to sell Ecosia or take any profits out of the company.

    How does Ecosia make money?

Like any other search engine, Ecosia earns money from clicks on the advertisements that appear above and beside the search results.

The advertisements on Ecosia are clearly labeled as Ads and are text links to websites that pay for each click by users. The ads are delivered to you by our partner Bing, who pays Ecosia a share of the revenue generated via these ads.

Ecosia earns a few cents for every click on an ad from Bing – or a portion of the purchase price made through an affiliate link. Ecosia then gives the profits from this ad revenue to planting projects.

Ecosia also make a small income on commission from our online store. All profits we receive go towards our projects – which means we can plant 20 trees every time we sell a t-shirt.

How much do you earn per ad click?

How much we earn per click on an ad varies depending on the competition on the key word and the value of what is being advertised. Some search terms like "credit", "bank account" or "solar panel" come with more lucrative ads than, for example, "chocolate" or "sticky notes".

A click on one of the more lucrative keyword ads may finance multiple trees at a time, others may finance a fraction. Taking into account that not every Ecosia user clicks on an ad every time they search, we earn an average of 0.5 cents (Euro) per search.

Does one search finance one new tree?

No, it takes approximately 45 searches to finance the planting of one tree. We know that Ecosia earns an average of 0.5 cents (EUR) per search. It costs our tree planting partners about 0.22 EUR to plant a tree. 22 cents divided by 0.5 cents makes about 45 searches until we can plant one new tree. Depending on clicks on ads and how much search ad revenue these generate for Ecosia, it may take fewer searches. Think of it this way: we currently fund the planting of a new tree every second.

How much money do you make in a month?

This depends on - you probably guessed it - clicks on ads. During the European summer months, our net revenue is often lower because people would rather be outside, whereas in winter our revenue peaks (especially around Christmas). To keep track of our monthly earnings and costs, take a look at our financial reports.

How much money goes into tree-planting programs?

Whereas Ecosia's monthly income may vary, one thing is always for sure: we use our profits from search ad revenue for tree planting!

We love being transparent with you. That's why we publish monthly financial reports and tree-planting receipts. These show exactly how much money we made from your searches, and what percentage of our revenue went towards trees.

Ecosia does not pay out any dividends to its owners. All profits stay within the company and will eventually either be invested or used for tree planting.

Please note that it takes six weeks to process the month's payments.

    Spread the word: Ecosia

    Proof that they exist:

OMG Trump is so dumb. People who support him got to be pretty stupid too. Simple science that even primary school kids understand.

Thank goodness climate change and changing biotopes is a hoax. The plagues of last summer weren't real, we were just all imagining itches due to invasive species. The heat of over 40 degrees Celsius in Belgium, France and the Netherlands, yeah, all millions of us Europeans imagined that. Just like the drought of last year and the economic losses. We also were to stupid to notice the eleven city (ice skating) tours of the last 20 years, not like it has been the longest time ever without a winter that was cold enough.

Climate change is real, but there is nothing anyone can do to stop or change it. It’s the natural cycle of our planet. The arrogance of people thinking they can play god and reverse the course of Mother Earths plan is the real tragedy.
